Howard Carter first discovered his interest in Egypt when his father, Samuel Carter, a well known artist, painted a portrait of an egyptologist. At 17, Carter was send to Egypt to be a sketch artist for George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, a financier of Egyptian excavations. Lord Carnarvon was granted permission to dig in the area that King Tutankhamun's tomb was located, but gave Carter the task of excavating there. In 1922 Carter discovered the steps to tomb of Tutankhamun and he and Lord Carnarvon entered the tomb and eventually found Tutankhamun's mummy. He remained in Egypt for 10 years after his famous discovery and then worked for museums collecting artifacts. He is arguably the most well known Egyptologist of all time.
